Whether you are a skateboarder or just like to observe the sport, one thing you may notice that many skateboarders have in common, is a lack of a helmet on their head.
Especially during times like flying high on a concrete bowl or sliding down a handrail on fight of stairs... a lot of skaters just don't wear them!
And I agree - a little, it does feel different that skating without a helmet on, less free I guess. Does it make my big head bigger and throw my balance off? Probably not so much.
On the other hand, I also agree that a quality skateboard helmet can offer much needed protection to your skull and brain, if and when a tragic fall should occur... just as it did to me in August of 2014.
One afternoon I decided to take a trip to the skatepark to carve around a bit, and the next thing I remember, I was waking up in the ICU unit in the local Emergency room.
Apparently, I had fallen while dropping in on a concrete bowl without a helmet and hit my head. I was out cold. Luckily there was someone else there that called 911 and probably saved my life!
I had a TBI - a Traumatic Brain Injury, with bleeding on the brain and no memory of what happened. In fact, to this day I still have no memory of being at the skatepark that summer afternoon.
Three days later I was able to go home from the hospital. Six weeks after that, I was able to return to work.
But I couldn't quit skating.
I was very fortunate to be able to get back on a board again. Now, when I skate, I make sure to protect my head, if nothing else. And the only helmet I have worn since that summer afternoon in August 2014, is a Triple 8 Sweatsaver! I can't recommend them enough!
As a matter of fact, since that Traumatic Brain Injury, I have fallen at the same concrete skatepark and hit my head in the exact same spot! But this time, I was okay. Because of the helmet.
