At The Carver Society, our mission is to open an all-inclusive indoor skatepark
(Action sports park, rec center, etc.)
facility for our wheeled-sports community in Akron, Ohio - providing a safe indoor space for skateboarders, scooters, rollerbladers, quad skaters, and bmxers to ride all year long!
The skatepark shown is
for illustration purposes only.
It is a 10,000 square foot
concrete skatepark designed by
The sample skatepark features:
A large kidney bowl, an open bowl/mini-ramp, quarterpipe, flat-top volcano, jump box, fun box, Long gap, manual pad, hubbas, roll-ins, corners, handrails, flat rails, ledges, banks, and stairs...
offering something for everyone!
A professionally built skatepark like this can cost approximately $50-$80/
per square foot, just for skatepark construction alone. Actual costs and design will be based upon total money raised and property to be selected.
(sample warehouse shown below)
This cost combined with the expense of putting it in an indoor warehouse (rent, utilities, insurance, maintenance, etc.)
for year-round use, highlights our need for support and funding opportunities.
Nonprofit indoor skateparks primarily operate by generating revenue through user fees (i.e.: entry fees for open skate sessions, lessons, camps), donations from individuals and corporations, grants from foundations, and by hosting special events - all while focusing on providing accessible skateboarding opportunities for the community, often with a priority on reaching underserved populations and offering youth development programs.
Having a retail shop offering sales & service, rental gear, and apparel, along with providing lessons, classes, camps, private party rentals, and special events will also generate additional revenue to help keep the lights on.
What size skatepark do we need?
According to publicskateparkguide.org:
Skate spots are very small skateparks. They are usually around 3,000 square feet or smaller and contain only one distinct structure. About 5 skaters can use a skate spot simultaneously.
(similar to FirstGlance Skatepark)
Neighborhood skateparks are the most common size and will serve a whole area of town. Neighborhood skateparks are commonly between 8,000 to 12,000 square feet. About 70 skaters can use a neighborhood skatepark at the same time. A single neighborhood skatepark can serve between 25,000 to 40,000 residents.
Regional skateparks are the largest facilities and attract skaters from a wide area. Many regional skateparks are tourist destinations, and most can easily accommodate large numbers of skaters and onlookers, and are suitable for contests and events. Regional skateparks are typically 20,000 square feet or larger. A regional skatepark can accommodate 100 visitors or more.
By comparison, the Akron Skatepark (Akron, Ohio's only free outdoor skatepark) was built in 2001 for approx. $332,000, and is 19,000 square feet to serve Akron's 190,000 residents.
Furthermore, there are plans to tear down the Akron Skatepark as early as 2027, to make room for a museum dedicated to blimps and aviation, since the skatepark is located on airport property.
This will leave our community with NO place to skate, scoot, ride, or roll!
Please consider supporting our mission with a tax-deductible donation today!
We can't do it without YOU! Thank you.
